Ready For Christmas?
I would imagine a lot of people like me get annoyed when Christmas advertising peaks its head above the autumn barricade. True it is best to be prepared and make the best of the early season to get some early gifts for your loved ones, but the domestic side of our business often leave making an appointment for their carpet cleaning needs in the winter months until the last minute.
Recently in preparation for the coming festivities, and the aftermath, our commercial clients are ensuring everything is nice and clean for their clientele. Upholstery cleaning in department stores in early November, we’ve just completed carpet cleaning work at a Michelin Star restaurant and will be returning in January for a freshen up and we have now taken bookings for December 2015 before we complete the work at one of our four star hotels this December. Advanced bookings are also very good for January and February.
We have limited dates available for November and December so get in touch early either via our website www.arenacleaningservices.com or call 01263833424 for priority booking.

Easter Early Again?
Okay so it's not strictly related to cleaning issues but the last few years has not seen our best weather, but it is frustrating when you live in a rural area that the Easter Holiday continues to be issued dates from late March to mid April.
The original plan I recall was to split the bank holidays more uniform throughout the year but Easter is the only bank holiday that moves around. According to the offical UK Government website This year Good Friday is the 29th March but next year 2014 Good Friday is the 18th April. For the sake of those communities that rely heavily on tourism like our lovely county of Norfolk the early Easter with it's poor weather generally keeps visitors away and this includes the following two weeks when students have their first real term break. Sites we service during the season like Manor Farm Caravan & Camping Park just did not require our services this early and most would prefer that Easter falls later in the year. The early Easter also deters other seasonal attractions and shops from opening because of the long gap between Easter and the early May Bank Holiday. A later Easter would encourage those to open and remain open until the season starts in earnest. Schools also suffer because between February half term break (18th to 22nd) there follows a short term of just four weeks until Easter. The May break ends on The 3rd June leaving a nearly 8 week term to the summer break. A later Easter would resolve this too as Easter could have a week before and a week after.
Tourism plays a significant role in seasonal and rural economies and parks and attractions need the income to use services they need. Services like mine. With less staff wages and lower staff demands it follows that general stores and services will be required less bringing more threat to jobs in the area. True we can not heap all the blame on the ever moving Easter break but there is no doubt it is a contributing factor.
2015 we return to an early Easter which is certainly no use to most people so petition your local MP to try to keep Easter late.
Oh and don't get me started on British Summer Time!!

Why does my carpet get dirty after cleaning?
15 Dec 2012
One of the most common questions I get asked is why does my carpet get dirty after having it cleaned. I was recently reminded of this when I was contacted by a regular customer trying to save a bit of money hired a popular hire machine from her local DIY store. Rather disgruntled she asked me why her lovely wool lounge carpet looked grey and lifeless after two weeks. I explained the likely problem was residue (soap) left in the fibre allowing dirt, dust and debris to stick to the pile. Following vacuum cleaning would then not be able to remove particles in the normal way. Over a period of time, dependent on use, the pile becomes saturated with soil giving the lifeless grey appearance.
The problem is two fold.
1) The detergent supplied. Generally this is added to the water in the clean solution tank. Often it is supplied in litre bottles and is more expensive in use than my professional chemicals. Hire equipment needs to perform so the carpet appears cleaner so a one stop chemical regardless of the type of soiling or the carpet fibre content. Wool should not be subject to strong chemicals. It can strip the fibre of its natural oils and more seriously if the carpet gets over wet, easier to do than you would think, and the backing is a natural fibre like jute it can release the lignin dye and create brown patches all over the carpet. Some man made piles also have natural fibre backings, polypropylene could be the worst offender as the fibre will absorb no water at all so whilst cleaning it will run straight to the backing unless you know what you are doing. Sorry wandered of the point, told you I was enthusiastic. So back to you hire detergent. The residue left after cleaning is what attracts the soil I discussed earlier. Unless we are dealing with specific problems found in public houses and restaurants I do not use detergents making rinsing much easier. When we clean carpets after a thorough vacuum we mist the cleaning agent over the carpet by sprayer and leave it to dwell for between 5 and 30 minutes. During the dwell I use a form of agitation a grooming brush, rotary machine or contra-rotating brush machine to release the soil from the fibre. With a hire machine the clean water and cleaning detergent is scrubbed into the pile as you clean missing 2 important points. The dwell and the rinse. The detergent is only in contact with the pile for seconds giving very little time for the detergent to clean, and the detergent is still in the carpet ready to attract the dirt. The vacuum motor is not powerful and the pump will not supply the pressure to rinse properly. There is also a temptation to put more detergent in the water than recommended or to keep going over the same area trying to remove the dirt and saturate the pile.
2) The rinse stage. The easier way is to apply the cleaning solution the professional way by sprayer as we do, allow 10 minutes for the solution to work and brush the pile. Then most importantly rinse once dry 3 times with plain water or water with a dash of white vinegar. Thorough rinsing will stop resoling. We use professional rinses specific for particular soiling and specific fibres. This all sounds quite complicated and by the time the hire machine is collected and returned detergent paid for and the day has been lost as you struggle to clean why not relax with a hot beverage (I like coffee) and let me do all the hard work with one of the most powerful extraction machines built and designed in the UK. Sadly there are some so called professional carpet cleaners that do not understand this simple principle so Call me Simon on 01263 833424 or 07876497897 or contact us here today. Should I not cover your area we would recommend a member of The Approved Carpet Cleaners Association (TACCA) You will find us on there too.

Some Nice Things....

www.arenacleaningservices.com
There really are some nice things about carpet cleaning. Not only is it rewarding more importantly it's the interesting people I meet along the way many of whom become friends. There are some in our industry who rush from job to job and not really take the time to appreciate the benefits, rewards and job satisfaction. Just today I visited a regular client and it was nice to catch up over a nice cup of tea relaxing in the lovely garden basking in the sunshine. There are not too many vocations that would allow me the time to do that. I then had the opportunity to travel across to Stalham where a gentlemen across from the United States is preparing a property and I was happy to fit in some carpet cleaning before he heads back. Tomorrow I have my first visit to a local nursing home, it's the variety that makes my day worthwhile.
I have to say when I am working due to noise I use ear defenders if the machine is not in the van so it's a great opportunity to listen to music or my preference podcasts, cricket or audio books. I have recently enjoyed the Harry Potter books read by the incomparable Stephen Fry, well characterised I was not sure I would enjoy them but it really did surprise me. Busy bank holiday coming so hopefully the weather will be kind to us.

Our Latest Training
T: 01263 833424 M: 07876497897
Following on from our recent training course over in Nottingham with Derek Bolton at Cleansmart, we are heading over to Acle and our local Prochem supplier Hugh Crane for a days training at their facility on South Walsham Road. Whilst I have been cleaning carpets for over 20 years and operating Arena Cleaning Services since 1993, I believe it's still important I keep up to date with improvements in both technique and cleaning chemical advances. It is also an opportunity to meet others in our industry which can be more instructive than the actual course. It's one thing I am most proud of, carpet cleaners do tend to get on well and help out when needed, agreed we are in competition but that does not mean we can not get along. The course is fully booked so I'm looking forward to good day out.

Well the Easter break is just about over and despite some troublesome weather I hope you made the best of the long weekend with your families. School holidays mean we resume our seasonal cleaning duties at Manor Farm Caravan & Campsite, it was great to see the team there all rearing to go and making those essential finishing touches that makes it a great family park and a pleasure to be associated with.
With spring in the air it's time to have a real good spring clean for those carpets, or that's what Jackie tells me. (The Wife) She is not too pleased having to wait to have our carpets cleaned but I have to say for those that have children or pets you have been quick off the mark as we have been taking confirmed appointments for the latter half of April and most from our website www.arenacleaningservices.com and recommendation, sadly not so with yellow Pages. It worked for us well a few years ago but so often I see them still sealed. I suspect with the ease of getting online most people like myself just use our favourite search engine.
A quick update on our AirFlex Storm. All going very well but I did consider that the remote system had developed a fault, but I need not have worried, it took some working out and Jackie's suggestion I change the battery in the key fob. It takes a women so i'm told. Mmmm £2.50 and all sorted. So if you have a Storm keep some 23A 12V batteries handy and change after about 4-5 months depending on use.

Congratulations to Roxanne, Rosa and Bret on completing the Sport Relief Challenge, at last count they raised well over £100, well done to all! In other non work news Daughter Becky has been home from University for an Easter break and it has been really great to see her, come Saturday she will be heading back so we can all go back to missing her, still a nice family dinner out on Friday to look forward to, but we did miss James.

Well I hope everyone had a splendid Christmas and are looking forward to an exciting 2012. It's been around a month since my last blog and except for a busy December cleaning what seemed like miles of carpet before the holidays I had little time for anything else. We have lots of exciting plans for 2012. Our end of tenancy service has expanded over the last 12 months and our residential and commercial carpet cleaning has also increased over 2010. We are always looking for areas to improve and make us more efficient without compromising our quality and our suppliers have not let us down with more advances in cleaning solutions, some of which we now have in use, others that we are are still testing.
The diary is looking good for January, just a few days available from the 5th, with the last 2 weeks booked up completely. We have a couple of special offers available, 3 for 2 and discounts for orders over £99.95. Please find more details and terms on our special offer page.

Spots - Stains and the Spectacular!
Member of The Approved Carpet Cleaners Association. No. 0011
T: 01263 833424 M: 07876 497897
Sometimes I get called out for
those little disasters that can happen. The photo's below show a wine stain
that looked quite disastrous, what I call a spectacular. I was able to rinse
away any prior treatments and then remove the stain following established
procedures.
What to do when it happens to you.
I recommend calling in a professional carpet cleaner to deal with spots and stains. In an emergency please call us first, it may save you an insurance claim, my advice is free and we can discuss the best action to take. In general terms the following steps will help but before attempting this please call.
DISCLAIMER PLEASE NOTE.
The following is offered as a general procedure and is in no way definitive. I do not recommend attempting stain removal without calling a professional first and the following is carried out at your own risk.
- Call your local professional, click the TACCA logo to the right and enter your postcode, or call me and I can advise. It is easier to remove a stain in its original state whilst it is still wet. Once a stain is dry it can become permanent, particularly with dye stains like wine. There are a range of treatments specific to each task and stain we have available to us and the equipment necessary to remove residues and neutralise treatments.
- I always recommend removing any solids with a blunt knife or scraper and then blotting the stain with a pad of absorbent towels and absorbing as much of the stain as possible into the pad. It's tempting but do not rub the pile, it will push the stain deeper and could distort or burst the pile.
- Avoid stain removers unless it has been tested on your carpet. Some will lighten your carpet or even bleach them, others can leave a soap residue which will lead to the area attracting dust and re-soiling. If they are used test first, follow instructions and never use neat unless advised to do so. Washing up liquids, laundry detergent, bleach, disinfectants and oxygen washing powder additives are not suitable for carpet cleaning and can cause serious damage. Always use protective clothing and gloves and always follow manufacturer’s instruction and observe health and safety precautions.
- Some useful hints and tips. Allways test any solution in an inconspicuous area first to check for colour or texture change. Never over wet and use solutions little and often. Blot well and dry between treatments. Work from the outside of a stain toward the centre. Use white towels or face cloths to avoid colour migration. Use laundered towels, they are more absorbent and it will ensure all manufacturing treatments are removed. Below are some basic solutions that can help with many basic stains although unfortunately not all stains can be removed. There can be a chemical reaction which may change colour and texture, dye stains in particular like ink, wine, tea, coffee and juice can be permanent. I will allways assess the damage and advise accordingly.
- Vinegar & Water Solution. Use 100ml white vinegar mixed with 400ml of water in a clean spray bottle. Ideal as a final phase and rinse for neutralising soaps.
- Surgical Spirit. Your local chemist may have this in stock but you will need to ask for it. Ensure adequate ventilation by opening windows and doors and follow manufacturer’s health and safety precautions. Solvents are more effective dry so use before applying water or detergents on oil based stains. Start here for tar, gum, paint spots, oil etc. Use a very small amount and introduce to a clean white towel and apply the towel to the stain, hold for 30 to 60 seconds. If there is no transfer of the stain to the towel do not apply again and allow to evaporate. Never pour directly on to the carpet as it can cause severe damage. If there is transfer allow for evaporation and apply again until there is no further improvement. Use the detergent solution as directed below in a spray bottle, blot dry then spray the Vinegar & Water solution. Use a dry folded white towel over the stain and apply weight, leave until dry, replacing towel as necessary.
- Apply plain water first. The aim is to dilute the stain and the best way is a spray bottle which will avoid saturation, do not over wet. You might also rinse a white face cloth in cold water and wring until damp and apply (add a weight or stand on towel). Allow 2 minutes then blot the area dry again. Keep going and remove as much staining as possible. If this does not work move onto a detergent solution.
- Detergent Solution. Use a large bowl or I prefer a spray bottle (rinse the bottle well and run water through the sprayer head to remove contaminates). Add 5ml or one teaspoon of detergent suitable for use on wool to every 300ml of warm water. Add the detergent to water to avoid foaming, gently shake or stir to mix. Spray the area allow 2 minutes then blot the area dry. Re-apply as necessary until there is no further improvement. Finally spray the Vinegar & Water Solution over the area then cover with a dry folded white towel and apply weight, leave until dry, replacing towel as necessary.
- Detergent & Vinegar Solution. Add 5ml or one teaspoon of white vinegar to the same detergent solution above. If the detergent solution does not work follow up with Detergent & Vinegar Solution. Spray the area allow 2 minutes then blot the area dry. Re-apply as necessary until there is no further improvement. Finally spray the Vinegar & Water Solution over the area then cover with a dry folded white towel and apply weight, leave until dry, replacing towel as necessary.
- Final Rinse. Use the Vinegar & Water Solution following use of all solutions above as a final rinse. Spray the treatment area and then blot excess moisture. Fold fresh white towels over the area and apply weight which will encourage more residue into the towel.
- There are more specialist solutions available to professional carpet cleaners leave any further treatment to them.

I've been very busy since our last blog with our commercial customers. Several restaraunt chairs and exclusive rooms at one of Norfolks top hotels and a large gym in our local town of North Walsham. As part of our services I also provide short term staff cover for those smaller offices that like to keep it all in house rather than involving a national contract company. Even your office cleaner needs a holiday or can fall ill so we are happy to provide staff cover as necessary. Next week two end of tenancy cleans, more hotel work some new customers and some regulars.
I am also happy to say booking for the winter are on the increase since last year so we encourage all who need our services before Christmas to book early now. We still have offers on our website offer page for the festive season.![]() |
